THE FUTURE MENTAL HEALTH COLLECTIVE

The Future Mental Health Collective (FMHC) is a global peer-to-peer network of private mental health funders, united by a shared mission to accelerate progress in the mental health sector.

As a peer-led, member-driven collective, we are dedicated to providing a trusted, non-solicitation space where funders can come together to openly exchange ideas, experiences, and insights. But we’re not just here to have conversations - we’re all about driving real action. The Collective is designed to help ideas lead to tangible collaboration and impactful change in the mental health sector.

For those who are new to mental health funding, the FMHC also acts as a great support network, helping them to get up and running and to navigate the complexities of the mental health landscape. Find out more about our support for new funders here.

In a world where mental health funding efforts are often fragmented, we aim to reduce duplication and identify gaps in the sector. By connecting the dots across the global mental health ecosystem, we amplify our collective impact, enabling each member to accelerate their efforts and create meaningful, actionable change.

Together, we are shaping a future where mental health is a priority for all - ensuring that everyone has access to the care, support and resources they need to thrive.

Who we are

The Future Mental Health Collective is an initiative of Kokoro, and facilitated by Kokoro and NEXUS. We work in partnership with other conveners, such as United for Global Mental Health, the Global Mental Health Peer Network, the International Alliance of Mental Health Research Funders, BrainMind and the Mental Health Innovation Network.

As of 2025, we are a group of 150+ private funders that includes:

Global Representation

The FMHC is truly global, with members joining us from all corners of the world and supporting projects worldwide. We grow via word of mouth and are especially keen to hear from mental health funders based in less represented regions, specifically Asia, Africa, LATAM and Eastern Europe.

Funders focused on implementation

Our focus is on implementation funding, with members working on critical areas such as education, advocacy and access to effective and evidence-based mental health services. We are not a group for research funders but work hand in glove with the IAMHRF, to connect the dots across research and implementation funding.

Funders across the whole cap stack

Across the group, we span the whole range of capital from philanthropy and venture philanthropy through to impact and for-profit investment. This diversity allows us to engage a wide array of strategies and approaches, ensuring that our collective impact is as comprehensive as it is transformative.

Membership Criteria

Must be a funder committing private sector capital to mental health services, education, or advocacy.

  • Members include individual or family foundations; corporate foundations or programs; private equity funds; investors that have a portfolio of mental health companies; or entities (including charities and not-for-profits) that have received private sector funding and are in turn giving grants to mental health organizations.

  • Members can come from any country in the world, and we are actively looking for more members in Africa and Latin America, so that we can all benefit from having a stronger, global network.

Must be the funder or CEO/Head of Foundation/Mental Health program.

  • To preserve the really valuable peer-to-peer nature of this community, membership of the Collective is for those who hold ultimate responsibility for funding decisions. There are events where we will specify that attendance is for members only. This is so that members can hold space for each other and share vulnerably in a community of like-minded peers.

  • However, there are many other opportunities to include representatives or a +1, such as our solution circles and geek-outs. We will always say on the invites when it is member only. Otherwise, assume that representatives and +1s are welcome :)

Must value mental health.

  • In practice, this means:

    • Making a positive contribution to mental health by funding mental health services, education or advocacy.

    • Making an effort to be aware of any negative impacts that result from your company for organization’s actions that could harm mental health, and putting in place measures to tackle any negative impacts when known.

Must respect our community values and our spirit of non-solicitation.

  • If a member is consistently soliciting other members or not respecting our values of trust and respect, we retain the right too remove them form the community (but hope to never have to do so!!)

  • Most importantly, we ask that members engage with an open heart and desire to support and help each other to get stuff done.
